Plan your chicken-keeping costs

Build a personal first-year estimate from your own quotes and prices. No typical prices are assumed, and nothing you enter is sent or saved by this calculator.

Use this chicken-keeping cost planner before you commit to a flock. It separates one-off setup spending from routine monthly costs, so you can see both an estimated first year and the repeating annual amount. Enter prices from your own area and suppliers: the tool does not invent UK averages or promise that any setup will be affordable.

Build your budget

Enter your own estimates in pounds. Leave a cost blank if it does not apply; a blank is counted as £0. Enter at least one amount to calculate. Prices are not pre-filled.

What can a chicken-keeping budget include?

Before buying birds, compare the full setup rather than the coop price alone. You may want to include secure fencing, weather protection, suitable feed and water equipment, safe storage, a carrier, bedding and replacement parts. Ongoing costs can vary with flock size, feed choice, waste, local availability, repairs and the time of year. These categories are prompts, not a fixed shopping list.

Some expenses are irregular. A roof repair, replacement mesh or veterinary visit will not necessarily occur every month. Use the monthly fields for costs you expect to repeat, and use the optional annual field for a figure you have chosen for less predictable care. Keep separate quotes or notes for anything that could change your decision.

How the estimate is calculated

One-off setup total is the sum of the setup fields. Annual recurring cost is your monthly total multiplied by 12. The planned first-year budget adds the one-off setup total, twelve months of routine costs and your optional annual set-aside. It is a planning calculation, not a quote, affordability test or guarantee of future costs.

No prices or welfare assumptions are built in

This calculator cannot confirm that a particular coop, flock size or budget is suitable. Check property rules, current welfare guidance and the real requirements of the birds before making a purchase.

Common questions about chicken-keeping costs

Does this use average UK prices?

No. It uses only the amounts you enter, so check current supplier prices and local quotes. Empty fields count as zero.

Does the first-year total include every possible cost?

No. It is only as complete as the figures you provide. Add realistic setup and recurring items, and separately consider repairs, replacement equipment, absences and veterinary care.

Does the veterinary amount tell me how much to save?

No. That optional field simply includes the amount you choose. It is not a veterinary recommendation, insurance advice or a measure of whether you could cover an emergency.
