Use this chicken coop and run area calculator to organise your own measurements before comparing layouts or discussing a setup. It calculates the floor area of one rectangular coop and one rectangular run, then divides each area by the flock size you enter. It does not say how many chickens an enclosure can safely hold.
Enter your measurements
Choose one unit for all dimensions. Measure the usable floor length and width, not a sloping roof or the outside of a wall. Enter a positive whole number for the flock size you are planning to assess.

How to measure coop and run floor area
Measure the internal usable floor length and width of a rectangular coop, then do the same for the usable run. If your run is an irregular shape, divide it into simple rectangles and add their areas separately; this one-rectangle calculator cannot account for complex boundaries, slopes, inaccessible corners or multiple levels. Be consistent about whether you include fixed obstructions.
The tool converts square metres and square feet and shows each figure per the flock size you enter. It does not determine which parts of a structure are genuinely usable; careful measurement is your responsibility.
Why area alone cannot establish a suitable flock size
This is not a safe-capacity calculator
It does not assess ventilation, height, perches, nests, access, drainage, weather protection, predator security, run quality, flock behaviour, management or current legal and welfare requirements. It does not label a setup safe, unsafe, adequate or inadequate.
Do not use the per-bird result as a pass/fail threshold or as permission to add birds. Review the whole setup and current guidance. Our housing and equipment guide covers practical design factors, and our getting-started guide helps plan before birds arrive.
Common questions about coop and run measurements
Does the calculator tell me how many chickens fit?
No. It reports measured area and arithmetic area per planned bird, but it does not recommend capacity or assess welfare.
Should I measure inside or outside the coop?
For a floor-area measurement, use the internal usable floor dimensions and be consistent. The tool cannot determine which built-in areas are accessible or usable by birds.
Can I use it for an irregular run?
This version accepts one rectangle. You can measure rectangular sections separately, calculate each area and add them outside the tool, but it does not validate whether the total space functions well as a run.
